SAIS: EH&S Team

Mission

The EH&S Team is helping MIT meet its commitment to being at the forefront of large academic research institutions in achieving and maintaining compliance with federal, state and local environmental, health and safety (EHS) laws and good practices in all of its departments, laboratories, research centers, facilities and operations.

We are designing and developing a management system that establishes and is supported by an organization both locally and centrally across MIT to ensure compliance with EHS regulations and good practices. We are creating a systems approach to environmental management which clearly delineates roles, responsibilities and accountability for compliance locally in Departments, Laboratories and Centers (DLCs) and centrally in the MIT Environmental Programs Office (EPO) and its EHS Office. The system also provides adequate information centrally concerning regulated activities and materials in use locally to support good Environment, Health & Safety compliance, emergency prevention, response programs and environmental sustainability initiatives, while maintaining the decentralized independence of research and teaching. In addition, it creates an effective EHS regulatory and good practices training program for members of the MIT community.

Processes Under Development

  • PI Space Registration - used to register spaces that contain hazardous materials or equipment
  • Training - application for students, faculty and employees to assess their EHS training needs and register for courses
  • Inspections - application for documenting various levels of lab inspections and identifying potential issues
  • Hazard Registration - used to identify hazards that are contained in lab spaces or rooms
  • Emergency Preparedness - application for emergency prevention, incident and resolution tracking
  • Findings / Corrective Actions / Consequences - logs and tracks EHS findings, corrective actions and consequences
  • Management Reports - summary reports of all data for PI, DLC, EHS, EPO and Executive Management
