IS&T Work Week
Support Staff, or "non-exempt" employees (not exempt from Federal and State overtime laws), report all hours worked, online, and are paid accordingly.
IS&T has defined a standard work week for Administrative Staff with a 100% appointment as 40 hours, not including lunch. For example, a person working 9am-5pm, who routinely takes a one-hour lunch, would be considered as having an 87.5% appointment, or 35 hours. IS&T does not have standard daily work hours - individuals should work with their supervisor to understand what times of day they are expected to be at work.
Since Administrative Staff are considered "exempt" employees (exempt from Federal and State overtime laws), they are expected to work the hours needed to fulfill their work commitments and are not paid overtime. It is recognized that working more than 40 hours is not unusual in the IT field. Anyone who feels the work requirements regularly and significantly exceed 40 hours should talk with their supervisor, director, or a member of IS&T Human Resources.

Sick Leave
The Institute grants paid sick leave to employees to guard against loss of earnings due to illness. Supervisors have the principal responsibility for the proper and consistent application of the sick leave policy and may require medical certification from an employee's (or family member's) physician indicating that the employee is unable to work because of the employee's or family member's illness, before the sick leave is paid. An employee must notify his or her supervisor on or before the first day of absence due to illness in order to be paid for sick leave. In cases of prolonged illness, employees are expected to keep their supervisors informed at regular intervals of their condition and their anticipated date of return to work, so that work may be properly scheduled or reassigned.
Sick leave balances for eligible hourly or support staff employees are credited on the employee's anniversary date (date of hire) of each year and are to be used only in cases of accident or illness and for medical or dental examination and care. Full-time and part-time hourly or support staff employees will be credited with 12 days of sick leave on the employee's anniversary date of each year, provided that they: (1) work at least 50% of a regular work schedule, and (2) have completed at least six months of service at the Institute.
MIT Personnel Policy on Sick and Personal Leave
Leaves of Absence (for personal medical or family reasons)
Federal and state laws spell out specific requirements for medical leaves that are needed either for the employee himself/herself or for family medical problems. Because these requirements are somewhat involved and because individual circumstances can vary so much, you should contact an HR Consultant for more information.
Job Classifications at MIT
Federal law mandates certain requirements for classifying jobs as "professional" or "technical," and therefore exempt from overtime regulations.

Termination of Employment
A termination is any departure -- voluntary or involuntary -- of an MIT employee. The IS&T Human Resources (IST-HR) Team should be notified as soon as a voluntary termination is known. IST-HR also must be involved before any involuntary termination is initiated.
