IS&T's Key Initiatives

IT Energy @ MIT
IS&T launched the IT Energy@MIT initiative in March 2007 to support the goals of the MIT Energy Initiative that focus on MIT Campus Energy. Over the summer 2009, the initiative will research energy savings related to printing with initial efforts focusing on duplex printing.  Laxmi Rao, MIT’s IT Energy Coordinator directs this initiative.  Learn more about IT Energy@MIT.

Mobile Devices
IS&T continues to develop support for mobile devices (cell phones, smartphones, and similar devices).  In the summer 2008, the MIT Mobile Web launched with nine different modules that allow the MIT community to get essential MIT information and services anytime, anywhere – and on any mobile devices.  In May 2009, IS&T launched an interactive text messaging service (MIT SMS) that when used with the Mobile Web provides a new way for MIT community members to access information on the go.  Learn more about Mobile Devices at MIT.

MITvoip
In January 2008, IS&T launched the project to transition the campus to MITvoip. The MITvoip production service is MIT's main IP-based voice service intended to replace traditional ISDN phone service as currently used by MIT departments, labs, and centers. IS&T is responsible for supporting all aspects of the service from the infrastructure to the telephone devices used by staff and faculty. The majority of the campus will be migrated to MITvoip by August 30, 2009.  All new building construction and any new customer requests will be completed using MITvoip. Learn more about MITvoip.

Next-Generation Student Services System (NGS3)
The NGS3 program was launched in response to an MIT-wide initiative - to develop a vision and strategy for student systems, to meet the needs of our students, faculty and staff for the coming decades. The goal of NGS3 is to meet this challenge - by creating an effective, sustainable, user-centric means of delivering Student Services to Students, Faculty, and Staff. Learn more about NGS3.
