What is NSCAM?

States, universities, and the private sector work together during this month to educate the public and provide tools that promote safe online activities. There's a lot to stay on top of; cyber threats continue to evolve, and new legislation and policies are being passed regarding data protection and the reporting of breaches.

The annual effort is spearheaded by the US Department of Homeland Security and the National Cyber Security Alliance, with involvement by the Educause/Internet2 Computer and Network Security Task Force to expand cyber security awareness on campuses across the country.

How is MIT Involved?

IS&T has been active this year in coordinating a month-long awareness campaign on cyber security for the first time. The goal is to increase awareness of Internet security issues, including password security, protection from phishing attacks, and appropriate, safe use of file sharing software. During October, posters and TV screens around campus will display security messages about these topics.

To conclude its campaign, IS&T teamed up with the Department of Facilities Operations and Security, and the Audit Division to sponsor Security Awareness Day on November 5. Learn more about:

Ways You Can Participate

Each computer user is responsible for cyber security, but we don't always think of it. At times, protecting yourself and your computer may seem daunting. However, if you know how to use the right tools and which efforts will reduce your vulnerability for cyber attacks, then cyber security will become second nature to you.

Here are some ways to learn more about how to protect yourself and to spread the word about the best way to handle computing security problems:
