TSM Backup Service: How To Run a Backup

You can do backups manually or you can arrange for an automatic scheduled backup. The chart below explains the steps for backing up your data.

Question
Manual Backup
Scheduled Backup

How do you initiate a backup?

You initiate a backup by using the GUI interface or the command line.

  • Step 1: Set up a schedule for your machine.
Usually at TSM registration time, you choose a schedule for your backup.
Example: every Tuesday at 3 P.M.

If you didn't make your request at registration time, you can request a backup schedule now.

After you've completed these steps, your backups will run automatically. Just remember to keep your machine on at the time of your scheduled backup.

What files will be backed up?

You choose the files to be backed up. If you are using the Basic Service, you can only select files in specific directories.

By default, scheduled backups back up all local files.

In the Basic Service, only files in specific directories will be backed up.

When does the backup happen?

You do the backup any time you want.
Mac , Windows, Linux

The backup occurs automatically on the day and time you scheduled it. Remember to leave your machine on.

Was your backup successful?

After the backup is done, a confirming message "Backup completed successfully" will appear on your screen.

To confirm that your files have been backed up, check the TSM Schedule Log file: Mac, Windows, Linux

If you notice that the scheduled backups are not working, please contact the IS&T Service Desk.

Note: No matter what type of backup you choose, to run a backup, you must:

  • register for a TSM account and install TSM on your machine,
  • have your machine turned on, not set to sleep,
  • be connected either to the MIT network or to the Internet.
