Overview

Most administrative staff at MIT do not have the spare time to regularly maintain their computers - upgrading software, installing anti-virus updates, backing up files, running performance boosting utilities. While some larger departments on campus have a staff of information technology (IT) professionals, many departments have no IT support or depend on one or two IT staff with very full workloads.

Are there any options available for departments that find themselves in need of IT support and computer preventative maintenance?

There are.

Information Services and Technology (IS&T) has a program that provides a solution. Departmental Services (DS) offers The AdminIT Program. The AdminIT Program offers specialized desktop IT services to administrative members of the MIT community. The goal of the AdminIT Program is to increase the reliability and stability of administrative computing through standardization, timely hardware and software upgrades, and efficient end-user support.

The key services of the AdminIT Program include:

  • Annual Preventative Maintenance Visits
    • During a typical AdminIT Preventative Maintenance visit, an AdminIT Program consultant ensures that a computer's hardware, software and virus protection are up to date, and that a sound backup strategy for the computer is in place.
  • Specialized Computer Support
    • The AdminIT Program offers computing support for a wide variety of IT-related issues. For quick computer fixes, we use remote desktop tools to connect directly to the end-user's computer to provide the solution. The AdminIT Program works in conjunction with the Departmental Services Managed Desktop Services group, MIT Service Desk, and other Client Support Service (CSS) support groups.

Options for Administrative Desktop Renewal

Through a related initiative called the Administrative Desktop Renewal Program, the AdminIT Program staff assists departments with computer standardization, desktop lifecycles, and discounts on large purchases of computer equipment. The Administrative Desktop Renewal Program is limited to qualified administrative users only.

Forum for IT Communication

While working directly with a participating department, the AdminIT Program fosters healthy communication between the department and IS&T on topics such as hardware, software, training and support processes.
