About Operating Systems at MIT

In addition to supporting MIT's own Athena computing environment, IS&T supports operating systems on Mac OS, Windows, Linux, and Mobile Devices.

Macintosh:

IS&T recommends and fully supports Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) and Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger). See the Mac OS X 10.5 page for information on system requirements, obtaining, and upgrading from a previous version.

Windows:

IS&T recommends and fully supports Microsoft Windows XP Professional SP3 and Microsoft Windows Vista Enterprise SP1. Services are also provided to support Windows servers and domains.

Linux and Athena:

Linux is a free Unix-type operating system, with source code developed under the GNU General Public License and made freely available. IS&T recommends and supports the following distributions of Linux: Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4.7 and 5.3. and Athena Linux 9.4 (based on Red Hat Enterprise 4).

Mobile Devices:

IS&T supports devices running Windows Mobile, the BlackBerry 8830 World Edition, the Apple iPhone, and the Apple iPod Touch.
