Adobe Reader 8.x for Red Hat Enterprise 4.7 Linux: Installing and Configuring

Install Adobe Reader

  1. Become root.
  2. Type the following:

    Prompt> up2date acroread

    Note: If you receive any errors during this step,make sure you
  3. Run Adobe Reader by typing "acroread" at your shell prompt:

    Prompt> acroread

  4. The first time you run acroread, you will see the following license screen:

    license

    Click the Accept button to agree to the license and enable use of the software.
    Result: The license is accepted and you can use Adobe Reader. You are now ready to configure Adobe Reader.

Configure Adobe Reader


  1. Choose Preferences from the Edit menu, or press Ctrl-K.
    Result: The preferences window appears.

  2. Select SendMail from the list on the left of the preferences window as shown below.
    Result:The following preference options are displayed:

  3. Choose an e-mail client to use when clicking on Mailto links in PDFs or when e-mailing PDFs to other users. If you have Evolution installed, click the Evolution radio button. If you select a program which is not installed, you may see this error message:

    Tip: Try entering the full path to the program (e.g., /usr/bin/evolution), or selecting a different program. Selecting System Mail should always work if others fail.
    Result: Adobe Reader will use the mail client you chose for e-mail related activities.

  4. In the list on the left, click on the Internet option.
    Result: You should see the Browser Preferences screen:

  5. You need to configure a web browser that Adobe Reader can use when displaying hyperlinks. Simply type "firefox" in the box, as shown above, and Firefox should run. If Firefox is not installed, you may instead enter "mozilla" in the box. If neither Firefox nor Mozilla are installed, enter "htmlview". Then click OK to finish.
    Result: Your preferences have been saved and the Preferences window is closed. Adobe Reader will use your selected web browser for web-related activities. You are done configuring Adobe Reader.
