About This Version

Outlook 2007 is part of the Microsoft Office 2007 suite of applications. Outlook 2007 can be configured for IMAP email at MIT and also configured for the Exchange environment. IS&T will continue to provide support for Outlook 2003.

Outlook with Exchange Email

Exchange is Microsoft's integrated email and calendaring solution. IS&T has carefully reviewed the features and functionality of Exchange as part of its review of long term strategy on email solutions for MIT. As a result of this review, IS&T is adding Exchange email and calendaring services to the existing UNIX email and MIT TechTime™ calendaring offerings.

If you want to access your email via the web, you can use Outlook Web Access (OWA).

Q: What features are in Outlook 2007 that are not available with Outlook 2003?

back to topHow To Obtain

MIT is now able to offer Microsoft Office at no direct cost to departments, for faculty and staff use, and for student use on MIT-owned machines.

  • If your Department, Lab or Center (DLC) has been participating in the Campus Agreement for Office, you will no longer be charged and will not be JV'd for FY10. For details, contact your DLC's Office Software Liaison.
  • If your DLC has not been participating in the Campus Agreement for Office, you will now be covered for this use. You may obtain Microsoft Office either through your Office Software Liaison or by downloading it directly at IS&T's Microsoft Campus Agreement License page.

Two important facts to know before you begin using Exchange email:

  • Outlook 2007 for Windows is the recommended application.
  • If you have not changed your Kerberos password in the last six months, you will have to change it in order to configure and use Outlook 2007.

Once you have installed Outlook 2007 on your PC, additional configuration may be required in order to use email at MIT.

There are 2 possible scenarios:

Scenario 1: You currently have Outlook 2003 and your email is configured to use IMAP. You plan to upgrade to Outlook 2007. After the upgrade to Outlook 2007, you want to move from IMAP to the Exchange email service.

To use Exchange, you will need to create a new profile. Follow the steps in Using Auto-discover To Configure Outlook 2007 for MIT Exchange Service.

Scenario 2: You are a first-time (i.e., you did not previously have Outlook 2003 installed) user of Outlook 2007.

To use the Exchange email service, follow the steps presented in Using Auto-discover To Configure Outlook 2007 for MIT Exchange Service.

Additionally, you can learn how to configure settings for mail format, spell check, and other preferences, according to the
