Overview
MIT has a volume site license for select FileMaker from FileMaker, Inc. The site license allows IS&T to distribute copies of FileMaker Pro, FileMaker Pro Advanced, FileMaker Server, and FileMaker Server Advanced to interested MIT administrative staff and faculty. Students, including graduate students, may obtain a copy of FileMaker Pro only.
License Terms
Certain restrictions of use apply under the terms of MIT's license agreement with FileMaker Inc.:
- The FileMaker software is provided for use by administrative staff and faculty, only on machines owned or administered by MIT, and only for Institute purposes. Students may request a FileMaker Pro license for personal use on personally-owned machines. Students should not request a license through IS&T if they have already purchased a license elsewhere.
- Each FileMaker license is for use of one version of a supported FileMaker software product. For instance: if you obtained FileMaker Pro 8.0 under the IS&T volume license and now upgrade to FileMaker Pro 8.5, you must stop using version 8.0
- The software associated with a particular license may not be shared or used concurrently on different computers. For example, although FileMaker may be stored or installed on a network server, each separate computer on which the software is installed or run requires a separate license.
- There is one exception to the "one copy of software per license" policy noted above: the primary user of an MIT-owned computer on which FileMaker Pro is installed is allowed to make one copy for his/her exclusive use on either a home or portable computer, provided the software will be used for Institute purposes and will not be used concurrently with the original licensed copy. This exception does not apply to FileMaker Server or Unlimited.
- MIT is required to keep track of how many copies of the software have been distributed and to whom. Because of this need to track and coordinate the software release, IS&T will register and distribute the software primarily through departmental representatives. The departmental representatives will coordinate the distribution to individual users within their groups. Anyone wishing to obtain the software should contact their department's software coordinator who will then secure licenses and distribute media. Information submitted during registration will be used internally by MIT for tracking and license-compliance purposes only, and will not be released to FileMaker Inc.
Who Should Obtain the Software?
Because of the need to track and coordinate the software release, IS&T will distribute the software primarily through departmental representatives who can coordinate the distribution to individual users within their groups. A departmental representative will typically be a Software Liaison or IT Partner who can be responsible for the deployment of FileMaker within his/her group.
Individual Departmental Users
Individuals may also obtain copies of the software directly from IS&T, but usually only if nobody else has taken on the coordination of FileMaker for their group -- the preferred route is via departmental representatives . Individual users should check with their department's software coordinator or IT Partner, if any, before requesting software from IS&T -- your department may already be planning for your upgrade.
Students
Students, including graduate students, seeking FileMaker Pro for use on personally-owned machines are covered under the MIT license agreement. While at MIT, students are entitled to all upgrades to this software (as long as our contract exists). Upon leaving MIT, the student is entitled to keep the version attained while at MIT, but is no longer entitled to receive upgrades.
