About This Version

Windows Mobile includes mobile versions of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint) and Outlook (email, contacts, calendar). Windows Mobile devices can be synchronized with Windows-based computers through ActiveSync, and Mac OS X computers through Missing Sync for Windows Mobile.

IS&T supports Windows Mobile 5 and Windows Mobile 6. Each of these versions comes in two "flavors". Each of the two flavors, although essentially identical, carry different names. The main differences between the flavors is in the interface, as follows:

  • Windows Mobile 5 Pocket PC and Windows Mobile 6 Professional provide a touch screen on which you can tap to operate the device, as well as key controls.
  • Windows Mobile 5 Smartphone and Windows Mobile 6 Standard do not provide a touch screen; you control all operations through the key pad.

Which version and flavor of Windows Mobile you get will depend on the cell-phone carrier you select, and the particular device.

Features:

  • All Windows Mobile devices include an email application (Outlook) which works with MIT's email system.
  • For synchronization of the device with the TechTime calendar, IS&T provides and supports SyncML.
  • Windows Mobile devices support MIT certificates.
  • Compatible with the Microsoft Exchange Server for wireless "push" synchronization of email, calendar, contacts, and tasks; the ability to "wipe" the device remotely.
