Eligible members of the MIT community can obtain Windows XP Professional licenses under the Microsoft Campus Agreement for use on Institute-owned equipment at no cost. Before obtaining the software, you should first confirm that the computer:

  • is expected to be used through fiscal year 2006
  • meets the system requirements listed on the Windows XP Professional page

In addition to the special requirements for MIT faculty, staff, and students listed below, rights to use the software are governed by Microsoft's Windows XP Professional END-USER LICENSE AGREEMENT.

Faculty and Staff Licenses

Faculty and staff wishing to install Windows XP Professional should check with their MIT Software Liaison before attempting to obtain the software under the Microsoft Campus Agreement.

Faculty and staff may download Windows XP Professional from the Microsoft Campus Agreement download site. [ Certificates required.] The download site provides a "CD image" in ISO or ZIP format containing the files required to perform the installation/upgrade. IS&T recommends that you download the ISO image and burn it to a CD, so you will have a "bootable CD" that can be used if you need to reinstall the operating system later. Stock answer 7454 provides further details on choosing between ISO and ZIP format. If you have trouble downloading or installing Windows XP, contact the Service Desk.

Important: After downloading the software, members of faculty and staff will automatically receive an email message containing important license information along with the Microsoft key code required for installation.

Windows XP Professional may be installed on any MIT-owned computer used by current MIT faculty or staff for MIT purposes only. Each faculty and staff member using the software on an MIT machine has the right to also install the software on a personally owned machine to be used for MIT purposes only. Upon ceasing employment with MIT, faculty and staff members no longer have the right to use this software and should delete it from their personally owned machines.

Please also be sure to read the Microsoft Campus Agreement FAQ for additional terms and conditions.

Student Licenses

All MIT students are entitled to install the software on one personally owned computer to be used for educational purposes. MIT students can download Windows XP Professional media from the Microsoft Campus Agreement download site [ Certificates required]. The download site provides a "CD image" in ISO or ZIP format containing the files required to perform the installation/upgrade.

Important: After downloading the software, students will automatically receive an email message containing important license information along with instructions on how to install the software. Note that there is no key code required for installation of the student version of Windows XP Professional; however, the installation must occur within five days of downloading the software.

After graduating from MIT, students may retain the right to run the last version of the software received while at MIT by completing the Campus Agreement Student License Confirmation. This is a separate agreement and will be emailed to students with Windows XP Professional licenses during their last semester at MIT. Students who withdraw, transfer, or otherwise leave MIT prior to graduation no longer have the right to use the software and should delete it from their machines.

Please also be sure to read the Microsoft Campus Agreement FAQ for additional terms and conditions for students.
