Telephone Privacy [Analog and Digital Telephones]

The MIT phone system allows you to set 3 types of Privacy Calling (i.e., suppressing caller ID information) on a specific call; to suppress caller ID information for all calls from your phone, send email to telecom-csr@mit.edu.

If you are making a call, most MIT business phones lines are set up to transmit both your Calling Number and Calling Name to MIT phones that can display this information. Only Calling Number is transmitted on calls placed outside MIT. What is actually displayed on phones outside MIT will vary, based on the called party's service.

If you are receiving a call from another MIT phone, MIT phones with displays will typically show both the Calling Number and the Calling Name ( last name, first name, limited to a total of 12 characters).

To suppress your name on a specific call:

Dial 64, then, after the dial tone, the number you want (e.g., a 5-digit MIT extension, or 9-1-areacode-number). An MIT phone will display the phone number you are calling from, and 'Private Name'.

To suppress your phone number on a specific call:

Dial 65, then, after the dial tone, the number you want (e.g., a 5-digit MIT extension, or 9-1-areacode-number). An MIT phone will display 'Private Number, and the name associated with that phone number.

To suppress both your name and phone number:

Dial 83, then, after the dial tone, the number you want (e.g., a 5-digit MIT extension, or 9-1-areacode-number). An MIT phone will display 'Private'.

If your name is displayed incorrectly, or you want your name or number suppressed for all calls, email telecom-csr@mit.edu.
