Dorm Telephones

MIT residence halls offer a variety of telephone service options, determined by the network capabilities of each building. The options include analog telephone service, cell phones, Voice over IP (VoIP), and MIT personal SIP accounts.

For the Fall 2008 semester, analog telephones are provided in each dorm room with the exception of Green Hall (W5), Burton-Conner (W51), MacGregor (W61), and "New" Ashdown (NW35), where Voice over IP (VoIP) and MIT personal SIP accounts are available. In these dorms, analog phones will be available in corridors and lounges for the convenience of residents who may want to make on-campus, MIT Tie-Line, or credit-card telephone calls. For more information, including how your SIP account works and your connection options, see Personal SIP Accounts.

For information specific to your dorm, see Phone Service in MIT Housing.

The following information on this page applies only to MIT analog phones in dorm rooms.

MIT Analog Dorm Phones

MIT analog phones in dorm rooms are limited to placing calls on campus; for example, Campus Police, Medical, other dorms, other MIT phone numbers. The basic service will not allow the phone to be used to call non-MIT numbers, such as businesses in the Student Center, or off-campus FSILGs or 800 numbers. Analog dorm phones can receive on-campus or off-campus calls.

Students in dorms with analog phones have the option to upgrade the room phone to full phone service, which includes unlimited local calls and 800 numbers, access to long distance services, and voice mail. The cost is $17 per month, with a $25 activation charge. Typically, the activation fee is waived at the start of the fall semester -- this fee will be waived 08/01/08 - 09/19/08.

Students who sign up for full phone service have the option of adding long-distance and international service. There is no additional charge to activate this service; subscribers will be charged per call. For shared phones, each student can have a separate long-distance account.

Upgrades from the basic to full services are handled by PAETEC, which also handles long-distance service orders for student phones. To register for full service, go to:

If you decide not to sign up for full service, you can indicate that your primary phone is some other number (e.g., cell phone). Go to WebSIS and enter another number, and flag it as primary.

Discounts on cell-phone services are available to students from Sprint/Nextel, Verizon Wireless, AT&T (formerly Cingular), and T-Mobile.
