Overview
Web-based training is also referred to as on-line learning, or just-in-time training. It consists of modularized training courses, available over the web, anytime of the day or night, 365 days a year. It isn't meant to replace but to supplement our IS&T instructor-led training. In cases where there is an IS&T course, we recommend that you avail yourself of the course offered at MIT, as it will contain information about the use of that product in our environment.
Web-based training is available to the MIT community and its affiliates only.
Web-Based Training Vendor
Element K was chosen as our WBT vendor in conjunction with the Boston Consortium for Higher Education schools (15 local universities including MIT and Wellesley). The Consortium determined that this vendor offered the highest quality product for the most reasonable price. Element K courses are available for use on both Macintosh and Windows machines.
Prerequisites
Each user will need an account to access the site (see Registration information below).

Note: These are the minimum requirements. We recommend that you use the latest Web browsers (no beta versions or modified browser versions please), and use a faster processor to access Element K more efficiently.
Taking a Windows course sometimes requires the use of the right mouse button. The work-around for the Macs are to click on the advance arrow and then click the Do it for me button. This will animate the desired action and let you continue with the course.
Registration
Request an Element K Account

When you request an Element K account, you will be given a username and password that will allow you to access the site for the first time. Please note that we process requests for new accounts on a weekly basis, so it may take up to 7 days for you to be notified that your account is active. When you receive notice that your account is active, you can go directly to the Element K Web site. Once you have accessed the site you will be free to change your username and password. Although you will be given the opportunity to choose your own user name and password to gain repeated access to the Element K site, we recommend that you DO NOT user your MIT email/Athena user name and password on the Element K site. We suggest that you keep the username we assigned you, and create a new password that you use only for this site. Although we know that the Element K site is secure, this is an extra precaution to safeguard your privacy both on the Element K site as well as at MIT.
Note: When registering, please include in the Email: your MIT email address (i.e., jdoe@mit.edu) even if you have another non-MIT email account, and your first name and last name. The vendor will deny access to anyone without a valid MIT email address. Web-based training is available to the MIT Community and its affiliates only.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Can I expect on-campus support for all products for which Element K offers a course?
No. Some of the courses are taught on IS&T supported software, others are not. It will be only for those supported products that you can receive help from the IS&T Service Desk. Other courses are offered to allow the MIT community to learn about other products that they might wish to use. We do not recommend, nor support, the use of those products in the MIT environment.

Where can I expect to get support for using the Element K product?
Watch for orientations to Element K offered on the IS&T Computer Training page, or if you have a problem using the Element K site, or with an Element K course, even if it is a course on a supported product, refer your problem to the Element K technical support. At this time, the IS&T Service Desk will not be assisting users of the Element K site.
