MIT Google: Handling Redirection When Your Site Moves

If your site changes location, you can help MIT-Google detect the change and update its search index automatically. To do so, set up a "301 redirect" on your old site, such that both browsers and search engines are redirected to your new site.

Setting Up 301 Redirection

  • If your site is hosted on web.mit.edu, follow the steps outlined in the Web Publishing Reference Guide: Permanent Redirects.
  • If your site is hosted on a private server, contact your server's administrator to set up the redirect.
  • Once set, MIT-Google, along with other search engines, will eventually detect the change and index your new site.
