Site Maintenance
Each month, you should run a link checker on all live pages to make sure your links still work. Use Dreamweaver's built-in link-checking feature or a utility web site. Note: Most link checkers can not test pages served from a secure directory.
If editing your site results in a changed url (page name or location):
Run a link search on the old url and notify all resulting page owners of the url change. To do this:
- Go to the altavista or alltheweb search engine web site.
- Type: link:http://web.mit.edu/my-old-url/
- Results will be all pages that link to your old url
- Notify owners of pages that link to your old url to update their code with the new url
Redirect your site visitors to the new url.
Set calendar reminders for yourself to update time-sensitive pages like event calendars or posted deadlines.
Handy Utilities
The following web sites offer utilities to help you test and improve your site in the areas indicated. These utilities are not sponsored by MIT, and are in some cases commercial, so you should approach them as a critical consumer, as you would any internet web site.
