Overview
A wiki is a collaborative web site that allows users to create, edit, and share page content directly in a web browser. IS&T currently offers the MIT Wiki Service to provide MIT groups and organizations with collaborative web spaces. Any MIT community group, project, or organization can request a wiki space which they can populate, edit, and administer.
The service offers a range of access options. A wiki space can be restricted to a small group of colleagues or can be opened up to the world. The service integrates MIT's well-established Moira list management service for authorization and can make use of either MIT certificates or the new MIT Touchstone service for authentication. Non-MIT users can participate as well, using the application's native username/password authentication scheme.
The MIT Wiki Service uses a product named Confluence, from Atlassian Software.
How to Obtain
Access existing MIT Wiki Service Spaces:
Go to the MIT Wiki Service Dashboard, click on name of the space you want to visit. Some spaces may require permissions to view or edit them. Click Log In to see the full list of spaces you have permission to view. For more information on permissions and access controls, see: Controlling Access to Your Wiki Space.
- MIT Wiki Service Dashboard [ Certificates required]
Obtain an MIT Wiki Service Space for your Group or MIT Class:
The MIT Wiki Service is intended for use by MIT academic, administrative, research, and student groups. A wiki space can be used for internal or external collaboration. The service is not meant for personal use, though. If you wish to create a wiki site for personal use, please use the SIPB wiki service, scripts.mit.edu. Anyone with a valid MIT certificate can request a space. As space administrator, you will have first-line responsibility for ensuring that your space conform to MIT Policies and Procedures. If you wish to request a wiki space, read the information on the request form carefully.
- Request a Wiki Space [ Certificates required]
Obtain an Individual Wiki Space:
Currently individual wiki spaces are not provided via the MIT Wiki Service. However, the Student Information Processing Board, a volunteer student computing organization, provides MIT SIPB Script Services for Athena. This service allows MIT community members to install a personal wiki in their Athena space. Scripts.mit.edu is not an IS&T supported service. Any questions or support requests should be directed to scripts@mit.edu. For more information, see: Getting Started with scripts.mit.edu

Note: Confluence's documentation may appear inaccurate in some places for the MIT Wiki service due to customizations made for MIT usage.
Where to Go for Help
Note: Support is provided for creating spaces, setting up access control to spaces, and basic instructions and documentation on how to use a space. Wikis are very flexible and can be used for publishing and displaying a variety of content. Vendor documentation and sample pages are provided to help space administrators. As a space administrator, you may need to assist your content creators as they get used to creating or editing pages in your space. Since rules, desired page formats, and guidelines often differ from space to space IS&T can only provide limited guidance to individual users of spaces.
Support for creating and administering spaces, similar to course and organization web lockers, is provided by the Help Desk's User Accounts group.
