Connect Via Ethernet and a Static IP Address

  1. Connect your computer to your assigned network drop using an Ethernet cable.
  2. Open System Preferences, either from the Dock or the Apple menu.

  3. When the System Preferences window appears, click on the Network icon.

    Result: The Network configuration window appears, displaying the status of the active ports.
    Note: If the lock in the lower-left corner of the window is closed, you must click it and enter your Mac OS X administrator password before you can make changes to settings.

  4. In the left-hand pane, choose Ethernet.
  5. Set the Location drop-down menu (at the top of the window) to Automatic and the Configure menu to Manually.
  6. Enter the network settings as shown in the table below:

    Ethernet Direct Connection
      IP Address:   your IP address, in the form 18.x.y.z  
      Subnet Mask:   255.255.0.0  
      Router:   the IP address of the router in your subnet, in the form of 18.x.0.1, where x is the same as x in your IP address  
      DNS Server

    18.70.0.160
    18.72.0.3
     
      Search Domains   mit.edu  
    Result: The completed window will look similar to the following.

  8. Click Apply.

Connect Via Ethernet and DHCP

  1. Follow steps 1 through 4, above.
  2. Set the Location drop-down menu (at the top of the window) to Automatic and the Configure menu to Using DHCP.
  3. Click Apply.
    Result: The IP Address and other network settings will be filled in automatically.

Connect Wirelessly Using AirPort

  1. Follow steps 1 through 3, under Connect Via Ethernet and a Static IP Address.
  2. In the left-hand pane, select AirPort.
  3. Set the Location drop-down menu to Automatic.
  4. Set the Network Name drop-down menu to MIT or MIT N.
  5. Click to check Show AirPort status in menu bar.
    Result: The window will look similar to the following.

  6. Click Apply.

You may now turn AirPort on or off, and select a wireless network, including MITnet, by clicking the network icon in the Apple menu bar.
