Email stored on the post office server
All MIT mailboxes stored on the MIT mail servers are backed up regularly in case of catastrophic server failure.
Messages placed within the deleted items folder are automatically scheduled to purge in 14 days. Beyond that limit, messages can be retrieved for another 14 days via the "Dumpster", an Exchange feature within Outlook or Outlook Web App (OWA). For more information, see:

Email stored on your local machine
You should make sure that important email messages residing on your local machine are included in your backup process. Treat them as you would any files that you back up. CrashPlan is the recommended backup solution for desktops and laptops.
