Overview
There are many options for sharing files at MIT including cloud services and file transfer protocols.
Cloud Service File Sharing
You can share files with others at MIT and around the world using cloud services. MIT licenses several options.
- Dropbox - Includes Dropbox Paper. Cloud storage and collaboration tools.
- Microsoft's OneDrive - Cloud storage
- MITGoogle Drive - cloud storage and file sharing
Explore the features and costs of cloud sharing options at MIT at: Data Storage and Collaboration Options
File Transfer
Sharing files between computers and systems can be done via transfer protocols or remote access to machines. Insecure connections are not allowed on MITnet. You must transfer your files securely over the MIT network using a secure file transfer method. The secure file transfer programs supported at MIT include features like password encryption, which protects your password from being intercepted and abused by hackers on the Internet.
- Fetch - File transfer between your device and Athena
- Secure CRT/FX - File transfer and remote access to Athena
- MindTerm SSH/Athena dialup
- How do I configure remote access on my computer? - Remote desktop
On Athena
Afs
To share files with one MIT colleague on Athena, the recommended solution is to create a folder with permissions that only allow that user (and presumably yourself) access to that folder.
You can find a reference to setting up permissions here.
Web
If you would like restrict access via web browser, you need something called a .htaccess.mit file. The "How to Restrict access via https" section of this IS&T article provides a good introduction to the topic.
