MIT Kerberos Accounts: Changing Your Password

If you have forgotten your password, visit the IS&T Service Desk in person and show valid picture identification so we know it is really you. We are located in the Atlas Service Center in Building E17, M - F, 8 AM - 5 PM excluding Institute holidays. Alternatively, you can change your password online.

Change your password online

If you know your password and want to change it, do the following:

From a web browser:
Change your Kerberos password online. Follow the instructions on the page to change your password. You may also use the site to set preferences indicating whether or not you wish to change your password using this website in the future.
Note: You may also use this page to change your password using a valid MIT certificate for identification without coming to E17.

From Athena:
Type the following at the athena% prompt:

passwd

This will ask you for your old password, and ask you to type in the new password twice. Your new password takes effect immediately.

From Windows:
You need Kerberos for Windows installed to change your password.

  1. From the Windows start menu, choose run and enter: leash32 next to open. Click ok.
  2. Under action, select get ticket and enter your username and password.
  3. To change password, click action and select change password and follow the online instructions.
    Result: The password change takes effect immediately.

From Macintosh:
You need Kerberos for Mac installed to change your password.

  1. Double click on the Kerberos icon to run. Click Get Tickets and enter your username and password where prompted. (Leave instance blank).
  2. Once you have a ticket, click change password and follow instructions on changing your password.
    Result: The password change takes effect immediately.
