Microsoft 365 (formerly Office 365) is a suite of products and services that includes Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and more. MIT community members can access the platform by logging into office.com using their valid @mit.edu email address and authenticating through Touchstone.
Licensing
MIT licenses the Microsoft 365 platform for use by all active MIT Kerberos account holders who authenticate to office.com via Touchstone.
Microsoft 365 online
- All community members may access their @mit.edu email account via office.com.
- Students, faculty, and staff may download Office desktop applications from office.com for installation on an MIT-owned device or a personally-owned device to be used for MIT purposes.
- Affiliates may use Microsoft 365 applications online at office.com but may not download desktop versions.
- All community members may use Microsoft's mobile applications for office.com products.
Other options
- MIT departments may install Office software on any MIT-owned computer, provided that it will only be used by current MIT students, staff, faculty, or contractors for MIT purposes only.
- Students may also run an additional virtualized copy of Office.
- Lincoln Laboratory staff should use the Lincoln software portal.
Microsoft Office is available to authorized members of the MIT community through MIT's Microsoft Campus Agreement (MSCA).
Installation
Uninstall any previously installed version of Office before installing MIT-licensed Microsoft 365 applications. See Microsoft’s documentation for uninstall instructions for PCs and Macs.
Self-service:
Visit office.com, sign in using your @mit.edu email address, and authenticate through Touchstone.
Students, faculty, and staff have the option of installing Microsoft 365 desktop applications from the welcome page after login. Use the “Install and more” link on the welcome page to download Microsoft 365 applications as needed.
Installing Office for another authorized MIT user:
MIT staff, faculty, and students needing to install Office applications for another authorized user, such as on a laboratory machine or for use by a contractor for MIT purposes, may use MIT's volume licensed installer. Visit the Knowledge Base for information on downloading, installation, activation, and use of volume licensed installers.
