Spectrum Protect (formerly TSM "Tivoli Storage Manager") lets you back up and restore files to and from your server machine, or over the MIT network, to a secure server that IS&T manages.

How to Obtain


Spectrum Protect is available to MIT students, faculty, and staff for use on server machines only.


Spectrum Protect accepts new registrations for server machine backups only. To back up your desktop or laptop, download and register for a CrashPlan account.

Warning: IBM is dropping support for 32-bit Windows and version 7.1 as of 12/31/2021.



About this Version 

Spectrum Protect 7.1 is a backup/archive client for server machines from IBM.

System requirements

  • Operating system: Windows 2008 server/Windows 7 / 8
  • Memory: 128 MB RAM required to install the client
  • Disk space: 1.5 GB disk space required to install the client
  • Additional requirements:
    • Java is only required for the GUI client
    • MITnet connection
    • Nodename and password. Register online or contact the Service Desk to register for Spectrum Protect service.
    • MIT account (SAP cost object) or MIT student ID
