June 4, 2024

Information Systems and Technology (IS&T) is retiring MIT's Webex service. No new MIT accounts will be created after June 7 and the service will be retired on August 30, 2024.

Since making Zoom available to the entire MIT community in 2020, it has become the video conferencing platform of choice at the Institute, and use of Webex has been steadily declining.

In March 2024, for example, more than 108,000 meetings were hosted by MIT's Zoom platform; Webex hosted 57. The Webex platform's use has remained below 100 meetings per month since June 2023, so IS&T will not be renewing this service.

IS&T recommends current users of MIT's Webex service do the following:

  1. Cancel Webex meetings scheduled on or after June 7, 2024, and reschedule them using MIT's Zoom portal.
  2. Download recorded meetings and transcripts from your MIT Webex account before August 30, 2024. IS&T will be unable to retrieve recordings and transcripts from the service after this date.

After June 7, 2024, MIT community members who have never signed into Webex through Touchstone before will not be able to sign in. After August 30, signing into Webex through Touchstone will no longer be available. If a collaborator invites you to join a Webex meeting they are hosting, you can join as a guest without signing in.

If you have questions or need help, contact the IS&T Service Desk by calling 617-253-1101, emailing servicedesk@mit.edu, or using the chat feature in the MIT Atlas app.
